You will receber that I called on you recently to discuss the subject of a grant to the miversity of Hong Kong, I explained that we considered that the staff of the Univerzity who had been interned in Stanley amp shold, as reşəka entitlement to full somuín pay, be treated in the same way an Governant servants. In fact this policy was agrosð at a meeting wich you attended here on the 21st August - ses para. 2 of the winutes. The ⠀niversity, however, is unable to met its oùliation from its own resources and therefore veeks a grant to enable it to do 80. The amount of the grant asked for is the eqʻrimlent of the anxunt that would have been mooived by the university over the period of the: Japanese occupation from the Government of Hong Kong on the basis of the sum provided for in the 121/4. budget.
Roughly I unterstani the total income of the 'miversity

FOOS
£23,000
20,000
Sterling investmenta
13,000
Local

61.000
of this income the only part that has been recoi ved
during the war is the 13,000 from sterling investments. In this commction I showed you a rough statement of the financial position of the University which had been drawn up by the Aating
